5 Little Pumpkins- Movement Activity
I love October! The weather is beginning to cool down and
Pumpkin Patches are open for business. Just think about all of the squatting,
lifting, carrying items, and the motor planning that goes along with a trip to
the Pumpkin Patch!!! Not to mention walking on all kinds of uneven ground!
There are so many different textures to feel, different smells to enjoy, and
the vestibular system gets a work out riding on the hay wagon. Wow!!! You can
really tackle a lot of goals and body systems when going on this type of a
field trip.
If you are not able to organize a Pumpkin Patch trip, here
is an indoor (or even outdoor) activity you can use to address a lot of the
same bodily systems using the book, “Five Little Pumpkins”.
Read the story during circle time.
Explain the rules of the Pumpkin Patch- each student will
have a chance to put their pumpkin on the gate. This activity can be done from
the floor to practice transitions and leg strengthening. You can have the fence
be higher on the board so that students have to stand on their tip toes or
squat down. Motor planning, visual tracking, and balance are needed to complete
the activity. This also incorporates turn taking and team work.
You can also change the colors of the pumpkins or make them
different sizes to work on smallest to largest concepts.
Have fun sharing this with your little pumpkins!
